Felt obliged as a Jane Eyre lover to read this. I was distracted by my attachment to Jane, might have been better to read dissociated from it. The beginning and middle was very good, started to come apart a bit at end- I felt less sure of who Antoinette (Bertha) was...it wasn’t so much that her character seemed to change, as that the story doubled back and change her character in a dubious way. and I feel that the unnamed Mr. Rochester did not comport with Brontë’s man. There was a predisposition to nastiness that I feel Brontë’s man developed after heartache not before. But I am motivated to reread Jane.… (plus d'informations)
