Second book in the Salma series, this early chapter book has Salma working through the issue of becoming a big sister and trying to figure out why her mother and her mother's younger brother, Salma's uncle have been estranged. Coverage of LGBTQ issues in the family in a straightforward way.

Salma's hero is Olympic swimmer Yusra Mardini and she joins the swim team.
But Salma goes up against some negativity from some of her teammates and women at her mosque.
How she works through these issues with help from family and friends makes for another joyful addition to the Salma series.

One of my favorites so far! Very sweet and a good mix of sad moments paired with the joys of community

First book in an early chapter book series, Salma Makes A Home had timely yet difficult themes, a bit surprising for an early chapter book.

Salma and her mother, both originally from Syria, have been living in Vancouver, Canada for almost two years and are awaiting the imminent arrival of Salma's Baba. Salma, while overjoyed to finally be reunited with her father, has lingering issues which are sure to be understood by recent immigrants: the missing of their former home/family/friends/traditions left behind while trying to get acclimated their new homes, languages and friends. Salma has the added burden of her anxiety of her fear that her Baba might not like Canada and wish to be separated again.

Illustrated with black and white art which enhances the story.
