Deadly Past by Kris Rafferty
Secret Agents #3

Suspend belief and focus on the romance, maybe, and you might enjoy this book. I have to admit I almost put this book down in the first chapter because I could not understand why a trained FBI agent would do what Cynthia did when she found herself in a safe house with a headache and some loss of memory about the evening before. My thought was that she would immediately call her boss and get a team out to the safe house not...well...not what she did do.

Next she heads home and there awaits Charlie. Now, she has a backstory with Charlie that includes a kiss that went wrong, the death of her brother who was Charlie’s best friend, a friendship for years that her team and his don’t know about...etc. This story seemed to jump from one unbelievable decision to the next and I kept scratching my head wondering what this luckless couple would do next. Neither of them seemed to be “smart” and that left me thinking that perhaps instead of a romantic suspense with FBI it might have been easier to understand if it had been a cozy mystery...maybe?

Anyway…I did finish it and was still scratching my head…

DID I ENJOY THIS BOOK? Not so much
WOULD I READ ANOTHER BOOK BY THIS AUTHOR? I think so – I have liked some of her other books better than this one.
DID I LIKE CHARLIE AND CYNTHIA? I didn’t relate to either of them so perhaps not
COULD I SEE THE TWO IN THEIR HEA? Yes...they had history and the backstory. I just didn’t see her as an FBI profiler and him as a forensic pathologist...not as I have seen other characters do their jobs in similar genre books.

Catch a Killer by Kris Rafferty
Secret Agents #2

FBI Special Agent Hannah Cambridge has had a very bad no good horrible year. She is exhausted from long nights dealing with an infant, in charge of a big investigation, is still grieving and then…the man she is grieving for shows up alive one day. She reacts a wee bit unpredictably when she sees him, waffles a bit about how she feels, has hormonal fluctuations due to postpartum changes and at times behaves – in my opinion – recklessly.

The chemistry between Hannah and back-from-the-dead Agent Jack Benton is still strong but there is a lot of air that needs to be cleared before they can achieve their HEA…oh…and a whack job serial killer rather unlike many I have seen that needs to definitely be dealt with.

I liked some of the supporting characters, disliked the killer and am eager to find out what will happen with Cynthia Deming and Charlie Faulkes in the next book. I wonder if there will be more about Vivian & Gilroy, too, and if Fergusson might end up with a lady someday.

Did I enjoy the book? Yes
Did I find it believable? Perhaps and perhaps not so much
Did I like this or the first book in the series better? Preferred the first book
Do I want to read the next book in the series? Definitely

Caught By You by Kris Rafferty
Secret Agents #1

This introduction of a new series had many slowly exposed secrets that the heroine keeps close to her chest…or should I say on her fingers? Avery Toner Coppola is the ex-wife of a mobster who is in hiding with her younger sister. She knows that there is a hit out on her and she needs to run again. When Agent Vincent Modena is sent in to talk her into taking FBI protection in exchange for files she stole from her husband…well…all she can think about is her younger sister and keeping her safe.

This is an action-packed story with a heroine unable to trust anyone but herself and a hero with his own trust issues. It is a story of ruthlessness and revenge. There is romance of the slow burn variety but with plenty of chemistry between Vincent and Avery. The FBI team seems a bit unbelievable with Jack being the lead of the team after having his cover so recently blown – he seems to want justice at any cost – where was his handler? Cynthia, the profiler, really didn’t seem to belong on the team but perhaps she and Agent Gilroy (and even Jack) are merely mentioned rather superficially so they will be able to have stories of their own in the future.

I really admired Avery’s commitment to her sister, her physical and mental strength and her willingness to do whatever it took to achieve the goals she set for herself. I liked the relationship between Vincent and Avery though Avery kept pulling fast ones and Vincent should have figured her out a bit sooner, perhaps? I liked the rings (read the book) and the legend of The Stinger and…enjoyed the story. I look forward to reading the second book in the series when it comes out.
