Elisabeth M. Raab

Elisabeth Raab Yanowski was born to a Jewish family in Szemere, Hungary and later moved to the city of Pécs. In 1944, she was deported along with her parents and her daughter to Auschwitz. She alone survived, and was liberated by the Americans in 1945. After living for periods of time in Ecuador and Australia, she moved to Canada, settling in Toronto. She raised two children and began writing in English, which was her fifth language. Her memoir And Peace Never Came was published in 1997 and won the Canadian Jewish Book Award.
