A. L. Le Quesne

Excellent short biography of Thomas Carlyle, with the thesis that his best work was 1837-1848 despite a very long career. Before this he was too under the influence of German romanticism and his own problems with religion, after this he became despotic in his solutions to social problems. George Eliot claimed little was written during the era that did not bear his mark.
