Note: This book is written entirely in Chinese. Common and scientific names are provided with the bird and there is an index for the scientific names.

Despite the book’s title, this is not really what is termed an atlas, but a field guide. This book follows the typical field guide format with color plates adjacent to the species’ respective text and range maps.

The 275 color plates show over 1,100 species in China. Each plate shows 3-5 species in a nicely sized illustration. Except for only a couple of the birds, only one illustration is given for each. This is the male if plumage differences exist between the genders; consequently, this field guide has limited use.

The artwork is decent but not quite “good”. The physical structures need a little work and the detail of color and patterns are frequently not accurate or real. When flipping through the pages, I looked at the Isabelline Wheatear and thought, “What is that?” Unless you can read the Chinese text, the illustrations for all the warblers will leave you without an identification for that mystery bird. The rough coloring works okay for the more distinctive species, but offers little help for the similar birds.

The text for each bird, all in Chinese, is one brief paragraph.

The maps use the same all-China template for the birds. A good touch was to include the three larger rivers into the maps to allow for some geographical orientation with the ranges. Two different colors are used, orange and green, to display the ranges. By the ranges for the various birds, it appears orange is for summer or resident and green for winter.

This guide might be helpful some of the time, but better options exist. They are “The Birds of Hong Kong and South China” 8th edition by Viney/Phillips and “A Field Guide to the Birds of China” by MacKinnan/Phillipps. Both of these are in English.
