I've followed horseracing since I was a pre-teen "horse crazy" adolescent, so I thought this might be an entertaining read. It was that, and more.

The choices for the "moments" weren't just actual races, like Seabiscuit versus War Admiral, or Secretariat's huge Belmont Stakes win (both of those made the top five), but included other notable firsts, such as revolutionary new helmets for jockeys that have saved many lives since the 1950s, or the development of the starting gate which most race fans take for granted.

Each "moment" was two to four pages long, well illustrated with photographs, and often had lesser known facts included. I found myself putting down this book frequently, not because it was boring, but to watch internet videos of the older races described.

Nice job, Blood Horse editors, this is one claimer I'm keeping!

I could not WAIT to get into this book. I have loved TB's all my life, since my Dad used to take me to the races at Delaware Park in DE when I was a kid. I studied everything I could get my hands on, & even though I would debate their choice of the Number One horse, I loved it. It's a book I keep on my shelf where I can reference it any time I get "the itch", usually when the Run to the Roses kicks up in spring, or when Breeder's Cup time comes around in the fall.

First Line: In 2005 the staff of Eclipse Press and The Blood-Horse magazine brainstormed to come up with a list of racing's greatest moments.

At the age of thirteen, I scraped together the money--a whopping $48 if I remember correctly--for a year's subscription to The Blood-Horse magazine. I kept subscribing to it for thirty years. I've always found their information and the books written by the staff members to be excellent. This book is no exception. The one hundred moments chosen by the Blood-Horse staff include not only thrilling races, but the implementation of DNA testing, the introduction of the modern starting gate, influential sires and more. I have to admit that I was more interested in the chapters involving races (yes, I still remember exactly where I was when Secretariat won the Belmont in 1973) and the champions that I've actually gotten to "meet", but each of the one hundred moments was well chosen and well written.

This book will proudly join all the other books from The Blood-Horse and Eclipse Press on my shelves. If you're interested in horse racing, or have a horse crazy child in the family, this book would make an excellent gift.

Man, so happy to have this. Some of my favorite horses and rivalries: Sunday Silence/Easy Goer; Affirmed/Alydar; Personal Ensign/Winning Colors.

Lots of great pictures: including one of Seabiscuit and War Admiral in the post parade for their match race in step. And two head shots of Silver Charm and Freehouse in the exact same pose. Fun for comparison/contrast reasons.

Needs pedigrees though.
