In London bouwt hij, samen met zijn tweede vrouw, zijn huis uit tot een kunstenaarswoning. De voorwerpen die hij verzamelt, gebruikt hij als attributen in zijn schilderijen en de woning zelf dient vaak als achtergrond voor zijn hedendaagse taferelen en portretten. Hij was actief als scenograaf in het Londonse (amateur)toneel en zijn werk heeft filmische kwaliteiten die ook vandaag nog regisseurs inspireert.
De essays in het boek zijn interessant en schetsen een mooi beeld, niet alleen van zijn leven en werk, maar ook van zijn entourage, waarin kunstzinnige vrouwen een belangrijke rol spelen. Niet zo evident in die tijd. Het gaat wel grotendeels voorbij aan het commerciële aspect van zijn werk. Tadema bouwt zijn fortuin op een voordelige deal met een kunsthandelaar en maakt handig gebruik van de reputatie van zijn woning en van het circuit van internationale tentoonstellingen. Dat hij thema's herneemt, kan best zijn omdat ze een bijzondere betekenis hadden binnen zijn vriendenkring, maar net zo goed omdat ze commercieel interessant waren. Al toont de anekdote rond 'Voor de audiëntie' en 'Na de audiëntie' ook wel dat er grenzen waren aan zijn verkoopsijver.
In zijn schilderijen is het marmer hagelwit, de zee nog blauwer dan de lucht. De bloemen geuren en de mensen zijn jong en mooi. Hij creëert een verleden dat nooit heeft bestaan. Het werk van Alma-Tadema is een guilty pleasure waarover ik mij na het lezen van dit boek toch wat minder schuldig voel.… (plus d'informations)
