Dance to Death is an autobiographical novel about the life and death of Popov's daughter. Popov writes in a clipped language that is often relentlessly, even surrealistically, upbeat despite endless problems. (There are hints that his wife is also an alcoholic; he wrote another book about her...) The book isn't enjoyable in any traditional sense and it's difficult to form an opinion about Popov's reactions to his daughter's difficulties--toward the end, he admits to indifference--but Dance to Death is certainly effective in provoking thinking about where familial responsibilities begin and end.
