Henri Poincaré (1854–1912)

Non è un libro facile, ma è estremamente interessante per chi conosce già un poco la figura di Poincaré e desidera approfondirne lo studio.
In parte trascrizioni di conferenze, in parte brevi saggi composti negli ultimi anni della sua vita, gli Ultimi Pensieri offrono uno scorcio particolare sulle idee di questo filosofo e matematico osannato in Francia ma non abbastanza conosciuto oltre i confini della madrepatria, senza il quale, chissà, forse la storia della scienza avrebbe seguito un corso diverso da quello che conosciamo.… (plus d'informations)

Henri Poincaré è stato l'ultimo grande fisico matematico dell'Ottocento. Nonostante questo, e le sue intuizioni come quelle sulla teoria del caos che sono state riprese solo mezzo secolo dopo la sua morte, non ha lasciato una sua scuola; la strage di matematici francesi nella prima guerra mondiale e il successivo avvento del gruppo Bourbaki ha spostato l'accento dalle considerazioni geometriche di Poincaré a un formalismo molto spinto. Claudio Bartocci nella sua lunga introduzione a questo libro fa un bel lavoro per collocare Poincaré nella sua epoca, anche se almeno nel primo e nell'ultimo brano chi non è matematico può trovarsi a mal partito nel seguire il filo del discorso. Sono più interessanti in effetti i brani più divulgativi e fisici: chi come me si è sempre trovato davanti la fisica come una serie di formule e formulette prova un certo qual piacere a scoprire che in fin dei conti le leggi derivano da un lungo lavoro mentale. Il caso? Beh, è trattato molto di sguincio. Anche se Bartocci afferma che Poincaré potrebbe essere considerato un precursore della teoria del caos, la cosa non traspare molto dal testo: si può leggere solo un articolo con considerazioni teoriche e qualche accenno al modo in cui la termodinamica sfrutta il caso. Per la geometria invece la spiegazione è più chiara: il grande matematico usava per quanto possibile la sua intuizione geometrica per arrivare alle soluzioni in maniera non ancora a prova di errore ma sicuramente con un grande passo in avanti.… (plus d'informations)

I have many books by contemporary authors that propose to popularize math, science and philosophy and some are very good. This is an original work by one of the greatest mathematicians of all time. Henri Poincare not only contributed to many different fields of mathematics, but invented a few himself. He was a great expositor of scientific learning and philsophy as well.

This little book was extremely influentual in the science world and with the general public early in the 20th century and is still published and a great benefit to today's reader. Even the least curious among us have probably heard Poincare's name bandied about in the past few years' newspapers (Poincre's Conjecture) and most of us have at least heard of Einstein's theory of relativity. Poincare not only had an immense influence on Einstein, he 'almost' had the theory of relativity worked out for himself before Einstein.

Science and Method should be a required read by any student of science or philosophy, and it won't hurt the rest of us to broaden and deepen our views.

As a side note for any chaos theory aficionados out there; this book is where Poincare discussed some of the basics dynamical systems and why he is sometimes called the "father of chaos theory".… (plus d'informations)
