In just over a year of owning Eat, Shrink and Be Merry, it has become my go-to cookbook. Every recipe turns out well, and every dish is delicious. I love how the Podleski sisters focus not just on reducing calories, but on increasing nutrition and maximizing flavor. There's a recipe in here that made me want to eat bran muffins for breakfast, lunch and dinner (A Bran New World).

Beyond just the recipes, the book contains a wealth of information on dieting, health, and nutrition. Sidebars on almost every page contain shopping and ingredient tips to help you out when the recipe contains ingredients that might not be familiar.

If you, like me, have a bit of a geeky sense of humor at times, you will love the silly puns, jokes, and drawings (sample recipe title: The Great Pretenderloin). The humor is exactly the same as it is on the sisters' show on the Food Network, if you've ever seen it. This is the kind of cookbook you want to sit down and actually read right through, there is just SO much good stuff in here. If you don't have this book, you should.

I started cooking using this book and The Joy of Cooking. Looking back, I think that's a good combination for an absolute beginner in the kitchen (which I was).

Although the recipes sometimes call for a number of ingredients, the steps in the recipes are generally very easy and straightforward. A good example is the Lentil Chili - lots of ingredients, but once all the vegetables are chopped and ready to go, you just dump them into the pot and add the other spices and liquids as you go.
