This book is a tutorial for the C programming language written for beginners. It contains a tear-out reference card called "Crib Notes" filled with concise descriptions of C functions, statements, operators, modes, and escape codes.

Perry follows the army's approach to teaching, applying it to C programming: (1) tell them when you're going to tell them; (2) tell them; and (3) tell them what you told them.

This book contains one major example of a C program, namely, a Blackjack program. The reader is expected to key it in manually, character-by-character, line-by-line. Much of Perry's teaching takes place by following this hands-on path to understanding.

Perry promises that if you will follow his instructions in this book, you will become a proficient C programmer.

Scattered throughout the book are special notes, clues, pitfalls, warnings, technical information, and comprehensive reviews to keep the reader on the right track.
