Story was unforgettable--a young man, Gaius, joins the Roman Army and rises to centurion. He loses his best friend, Aulus, who is like a brother to him, in battle. This is a pivotal event. Through his adventures he is posted to Judaea and becomes a Christian after being exposed to Jesus and His teachings. The frame of the story is Gaius's court martial--has his faith influenced him not to follow military protocol in his duties? This is told with flashbacks, but they were disjointed and the sequence of those parts of the story was hard to follow. Pacing was poor. I had to figure out what came before and what after Aulus's death. Also, the author was shaky in both history and geography. Genua near Hispania? Pontius Pilot? The author could have used a good editor and proofreader; there were so many errors in proofing that they did get in the way of the story. The author did add a tidbit of creativity which I've often speculated on; he made the [unnamed] centurion whose "dreadfully tormented" servant Jesus healed and Centurion Cornelius of the Bible, the same person. I've often wondered about that; it makes perfect sense. The narrative will not be forgotten easily, but there were too many errors that got in the way. One of the author's main themes was the idea of family--both the personal family and Gaius's soldier comrades as a "band of brothers".… (plus d'informations)

I've been looking forward to this book since I first heard about it. I was even happier when I realized that it wouldn't be the kind of book I expected. Since I knew he was a White House staffer, I thought it might be filled with things about politics that might distract me from the point of the book. It wasn't.

I'd probably enjoy hanging out with Paul and hearing his stories in person. I found a writer who I would follow through his travels, and his writing made me feel as if I knew him better than I really did. I love those kinds of stories. I hope he writes more very soon!… (plus d'informations)

Unexpected Journeys is a very inspirational true life adventure of the author, Paul Perkins. We all go through some tough times in life but I'm not sure I would be as brutality honest as the author. The emotions that he has gone throughout his childhood and adulthood made him into the man he is today. God had a plan for him and you go through it with him feeling the pain, heartache, and ultimately faith in God.

Paul gives readers insight to a world we may never see in person but with his exceptional writing, we can vividly "see" every tree, different cultures , mountains and the beauty that God has created. He travels to places that at times are very remote, but he comes away with life changing experiences. I love his transparency as he shares his innermost thoughts. How many of us have questioned where we should be in life? He deals with forgiveness that is painful but healing. Many of us feel we are not accepted but Paul shows us how he overcame that. God can heal the broken-hearted, He can help you work through past trauma and He can show you how to forgive and love unconditionally. This is a very emotional book that is written with passion and shows how his struggles made him stronger. I hope everyone will pick up a copy of this book and take a journey of renewing and freedom from past hurts.

"What the child within needed-what I needed-was what David had just provided. The soft reassurance that none of the pain, none of the suffering, none of the shame was any of my fault."
