This is a very detailed, straightforward summary of population, demographic, trade, economic, and financial attributes of the American colonies in the period preceding the Revolution. Perkins gives particular attention to regional differences and similarities among the 13 colonies, and analyzes the colonial experience in comparison with contemporary conditions in England. Each chapter has an excellent annotated bibliography. There is a modest index and explanatory maps and tables.
Perkins argues that imperial taxes were not a significant cause of the colonists' decision in 1776 to break away from England, because the overall tax burden (including imperial and internal taxes) in the colonies was quite low: imperial taxes "had little real impact on the colonies." (p. 142)
