Courte biographie
Mr. Perel's amazing story of survival was recounted in his 1989 memoir, originally entitled Ich war Hitlerjunge Salomon (I Was Hitler Youth Salomon). It was adapted into the 1990 historical film Europa Europa. Although he had previously chosen to put his Holocaust memories aside, after the book and film came out, he often toured and gave talks throughout Europe about his wartime experiences. Dutch playwright Carl Slotboom wrote a play based on Mr. Perel's story called Du sollst leben (Dutch: Je zult leven; English: You Shall Live), which premiered in 2002.

I would not recommend this book even though it is very well written. He claims, and there is no reason to doubt it, to speak German, Russian, Polish, and Yiddish, He is obviously highly intelligent. Perel consults a medium concerning his brother and felt the information was factual and trustworthy. Perel has a nice survival story to tell but the moralizing about Axis and Allies gets lost in his defense of adopting Nazi doctrines while secretly trying to avoid his own detection as a Jew. This book felt like a version of Crime and Punishment with Raskolnikov being a murderer trying to rationalize his crime, substituted by Perel being a Nazi trying to rationalize his not trying to sabotage any Nazis. His theme of his mother's final parting wish to "stay alive" motivates his course of action almost everyday. There is nothing wrong with the desire to avoid being a victim of the Third Reich's program of genocide. However, Perel many times says that he enjoys the ability to blend in to survive, although it sounds strange to hear him criticize others for not doing more to stop the Final Solution from being carried out. Perel also says he favored the Communists and Russians even though after the war ended Stalin went on to systematically crush Eastern Europe in a fashion worthy of Hitler. Perel never offers an explanation for the Post-War Communist actions. He states he later became an Israeli and fought in the Arab-Israeli War under Moshe Dayan. The film adaptation might be able to avoid these issues (it did get an Academy Award nomination for adapted screenplay) but I have not seen it. I have always had an interest in WWII memoirs, which is why I eventually picked up this fast read.…

I got to know the author when he gave a speech about his life in my highschool.
If I hadn't heard him speak in person about it, I wouldn't believe the experiences he made in the Third Reich, so incredible is his struggle for survival as a Jew in a Nazi society!
Highly recommendable!
