Jonathan T. Pennington (PhD, University of St Andrews) is associate professor of New Testament interpretation and director of research doctoral studies at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He is on staff as a preaching pastor at Sojourn East Church in Louisville, Kentucky, and hosts and afficher plus coproduces the popular web series Cars, Coffee, Theology. I rate this book highly as he opens up a new way of presenting Jesus. Really he is referring to the combined witness of the Bible, Jesus, the OT and the apostles, but it makes a change to have Christianity presented as a good way of living. Jesus is described as a great teacher, and exemplar of the way of life, and not just as our sacrifice, Lord, and teacher of religion. He refers extensively to Plato, Aristotle the Stoics and Epicurus and suggests that Jesus was presented as an alternative to them by the early church. So there is not a great deal said about forgiveness, blood, and atonement. It opens up the possibility of a welcome change from the usual approach to those outside the faith. He looks at how both testaments have something to say on metaphysics, ethics, epistemology and politics and he notes the variety in the faith of the OT, see the contrast between Proverbs and Job, or Ecclesiastes. He highlights the way Jesus is presented as a philosopher in the gospels.… (plus d'informations)
