This book follows an interesting concept. Evil forces have overtaken the land, and it is up to a herbalist called Raven to unlock the magic of a strange log.

The story may seem a bit odd, but it did hold my interest.

What is to be a boring week at Mon Repose bording house for two friends becomes filled with mystery and a hint of magic. Making a new friend and getting up to all sorts of mischief leads to an interesting and creative way to spend a week with some quirky characters and a moment or two of suspense. A unique story that would appeal to any middle grader.

This is a LTMG in exchange of an honest review.
I liked this book from the beginning. It dragged me in with the first sentence and kept me wondering till the end. It's a nice adventure to follow Raven and see the events unfold, full of unexpected turns and strange gods.
Absolutely to recommend.

While I liked the plot - the children and their uncle getting pulled into a time-warp / alternative universe and having to first survive it and then escape - I have to agree with earlier reviewers in that I found the obvious sexism and racism difficult to overcome and in my opinion detrimental to the novel as a whole, which I felt was well written. Having said that, I would comment that both Billie and Uncle Bill were not portrayed as very likeable and I did not find either of them very engaging; and also that the story could have been written with a little more suspense. However, I am sure it would appeal to the target age group since the story is unusual and the main character is sympathetic.… (plus d'informations)
