If you have the time, walking can be great exercise. This book has lots of little tips and different ways to walk, although I don’t use all of them, eg I try not to walk carrying my book bag as if it were weights/resistance training walking, anymore, just because it diminishes the enjoyment and is no longer necessary, and I never did all the stretches you’re supposed to do—stretches are maybe the best part of this book—and it’s easy for lapses to grow over time, although maybe when I get less tense about time management bullshit and control, I’ll let myself kill some time stretching, right….

Anyway, walking is eminently cheap, well, free, and has few if any entry barriers. Assuming you live in a safe neighborhood and can tolerate the weather, you can do it whenever you have time. Even during the height of COVID you could go out and walk. Unlike running you don’t need special shoes, and the risk of injury (although present) is less. And walking can help you manage weight and promote health & feelings of wellbeing.

I’ll probably always walk some because it can be so pleasant in certain areas, but I’m trying to transition away from having it be my main form of exercise. (And although calorie management and exercise is important to me, I’ve also transitioned away from thinking I can measures my height and instantly know my “ideal weight” using that mysterious chart, you know. I just want to look and feel good, without eating grossly unhealthy foods regularly, being regularly sedentary, or regularly hungry, you know.) The main downside to walking for exercise, aside from the investment of time, which is a close second, perhaps, is just that it’s usually so solitary, you know. You go off and you walk away from the world….

Although I won’t forget or disown this book—I can disown books; they’re not children, right—but although it’s ~certainly~ not something I never did or can’t do, (like running), I will kinda move on; next stop: “The Joy of Movement”, and “Pickleball for Dummies”.
