Talks about the history of Cinco de Mayo and how it is celebrated.
I'd rather introduce the holiday to my students some other way. This book is pretty juvenile and I feel like doesn't tell the whole story.

I quite like The Hunchback of Notre Dame and I usually don't have any problems with graphic novels, but now I'm not a happy camper! Whether you like the artwork or not, depends on personal taste - this was just not my cup of tea. But what disappointed me most, is that this is merely a simple summary of a great classic, which they could have done more with.

This informational book gives a good synopsis of what Cinco de Mayo is and the impacts it has on the Mexican culture. It is a great book to read to the class on May 5th. This book is a great example of an informational book because it presents the history of the Mexican holiday in a way that is engaging with students.
Use: To have a culturally inclusive classroom; Read it on may 5th and teach them about the holiday.
Media: Acrylics

Note: This “Beauty and the Beast” is part of a book that contains other tales.

“Beauty and the Beast” as retold by L. L. Owens is based on the oldest version of the tale: that written by Madame de Villeneuve. This classic story of the kind daughter sacrificing herself to go live with the Beast in lieu of her father comes to life in this shortened, but well-written version. The plot is easy to follow, and the selfish personalities of Beauty’s siblings who only think of being rich again as well as the kindness and unselfishness of Beauty and her father come through. There is plenty of lively and straightforward dialogue, which renders the story more appealing for younger readers, or for a read-aloud.

The one critique I have is that there are no illustrations except for one black and white drawing at the very beginning representing Beauty with the Beast peering at her from the background. It would have been nice to have a few more illustrations, especially one at the end picturing the prince after his transformation from the Beast. Color illustrations also would be more attractive to children. Ages 7 to 10 (and younger for read-alouds).
