This entire series is a wonderful way to learn history or teach it to adolescents. I find today's generations seem to recall more when they learn through other people (pop songs, celebrity gossip, etc.), so what better way to teach history than through someone else's perspective? Yes, "authentic" diaries would be "better", but would the language really hold the modern student's attention? Did the diary writer know what WOULD be important in the context of history? Probably not.

Enjoyed, recommend for senior primary level. Some minor sexual references.

This is the story of two half sisters who have run away from home because their mother is an alcoholic and her boyfriend has been abusing the younger sister. Roz, the older (15) sister decides to hideout in her friend's remote beach house until she decides what to do. While there she is helped by the hermit like neighbour who asks no questions about why the girls are there because he has problems of his own. Roz also befriends a local boy who is working in asecond-hand bookshop because he has been expelled from school. But meanwhile Kapiti island seems to be influencing her dreams, and her younger sister is getting very ill. Should she turn them in or will that mean having to face the abuse again. Great, suspense filled story from New Zealand about finding your place in the world.… (plus d'informations)
