I really tried to push through and finish this, but I ended up not listening to any audiobooks because this was holding up the queue. I think the real problem with this, for me, was that it just really _really_ was not what I was expecting based on the blurb. I did not enjoy the story, I felt really bad while listening to it and I had a constant feeling of dread with me as the story progressed. Maybe I could have finished this if I read it another time, but for now I'm giving up on this.

This audiobook gets off to a reasonable if tame start. I was wondering if I should stick with it so I read the synopsis. Eek! I'd just read Why Does He Do it by the psychologist Lundy Bancroft, which cut close to home, so that I didn''t fell strong enough to venture into the world of a controlling man. Especially one that took its justification from religion!

BTW, I love the comments of purple Pisces 22 below.

What just happened? There I was listening to this book while doing some housework, and suddenly this average book became a jaw dropper!!
The story isn’t exactly original, but there are a few parts take it up a notch. It’s the basic story of a couple who meet and fall in love and marry. He is gorgeous and rich and everything a woman could want any man. And also controls her all the way down to what she wears, what she eats and how many breaths a minute she takes.
His “family” is his church. And that takes things in a whole different direction. They definitely abide by the rule that a woman is basically a man’s property and should do anything and everything he wants her to do. without giving away too much, things escalate as they often do in the situations. But the events in the last part of the book literally made my jar drop.
This is the first book I’ve read by Rena Olsen. I’m not even sure if or how many other books she even has but I am definitely a new fan. I love when your typical suspense novel becomes untypical. I don’t think there’s much more us mystery fans could want in a good thriller.

This is a very interesting book regarding human trafficking. When authorities storm the home of Clara and her husband, they are separated. He is taken to jail; she is taken to a place of safety where she can be questioned.
The story goes back and forth between chapters titled Now, and Then.

Usually I don't like books that change direction with each chapter, but this one worked. Clara loves the son of Mama and Papa G. With her marriage to Glen comes additional responsibilities of the various buildings on the compound.

Slowly, she comes to realize that as the caretaker of children and young adults that they are sold to the highest bidder. The children are kept under close supervision. And, punishment is meted violently by Glen when he believes children do not obey. They dare not escape.

Whereas Clara, whose real name is Diana, reused to cooperate with the police and psychologist assigned to her, eventually, she realizes that she was brainwashed, and like all the little girls she oversaw, she too was abducted.

Dealing with this difficult subject, the writer does an excellent job of carefully uncovering the layers of brainwashing.
