Entertaining look at one segment of the history of the New York Police Department from just before the Civil War to just before World War I, focusing on a few individuals in particular, men that defined the way the NYPD handled criminal detection. One interesting point is that Oller debunks some of the stories that were long told by Herbert Asbury in his books (and thus, Luc Sante as well). NYC fans will love it.

Very interesting biography of Kate Chase Sprague, who ruled 1860s American society as Queen of Washington. This book is fascinating. Kate Chase was someone I knew very little about until reading a book about President Chester Arthur recently. I was inspired to learn more, so I purchased this book. I am very glad I did.

Kate knew all the political personalities of her day. She visited the courts of Europe and even lived their for a time. She harbored Presidential aspirations for the important men in her life, but these were never to come to fruition.

Excellent reading.

To be honest, apparently, there isn't much information to be had about his life either before the war or after, so this is primarily an account of his battles taken from contemporary sources. If you like that kind of thing (and I do), it's a detailed account of the various skirmishes and battles he and his troops were involved in.
I remember the old Disney series which I watched religiously, but it is not accurate at all. Marion was a plain and earnest man who loved his country and whose men loved him. The war in the south lasted beyond Yorktown, and the fighting between the Whigs and Tories was brutal. Marion was in the midst of it all. This book is a small window into that war.… (plus d'informations)

Definitely for history buffs. It rolls on and on thru campaigns and marches and I'm not exactly sure which part "saved" the revolution but I'm sure all of it helped. Lots of side digressions but still an interesting read.
