This book tells the story of the battle of Culloden, one of the quickest and most brutal defeats in history. The battle was between the largely Scottish highland supporters of Charles Stuart (Bonny Prince Charley) and the largely English supporters of King George III. What I especially enjoyed was the story of the aftermath of the battle, including some unexpected consequences, such as a comprehensive mapping of the Scottish Highlands. The author also traces the lives of some of the main figures such as the Duke of Cumberland, who went from war hero to a discredited "butcher" over time. And Charles Stuart who went from would-be king to an abusive alcoholic. There were also several "asides" that delved into specific weapons or battle formations, and the culturre and politics of the day. Well worth reading.… (plus d'informations)
