The author had some cooperation from Madden's widow and did much independent research. As a result, his biography is much more solid than most gangster biographies. His worse flaw seems to be taking Madden's later persona (after his street punk days) of a "shy, polite, quiet man" at face value, rather than as the camouflage of a predator.
