I believe this is what the kids call a delightful romp.

An unexpected gem, this book had me at Wendigo ordering Timbits at a Tim Horton's drive-through. Humor is so hard to do well. Either there's too much of a sitcom desperation to the one-liners or the humor is of the New Yorker variety. Perhaps good for a silent chuckle or a wry smile. But I was laughing out loud many times as I read this hugely imaginative book. It takes its inspiration from various god/goddess figures across cultures--aforementioned Wendigo, Hercules, Thor and Zeus, you get the picture. But their antics are straight out of the "meh" culture and the juxtaposition of the modern syntax and diction of the millenial hipster (and those on the far side of 35--ahem) with their immense pantheonic (yes, I just made up that word) reputation had me reading out passages to my husband late at night.

My only complaint is that it's too brief. And yes, I realize this complaint is the "my only weakness is that I work too hard" version of literary criticism, but I truly found the book a delight. And it is quite short. Also, know that Hercules slays the silverfish behind the water heater AND explains Pinterest to his aunt: just two of his seven "marginally easier labors."
