Robert Gray is a mysterious man in American history. He is credited with discovering the mouth of the Columbia River, which is a big deal in my neck of the woods. It gave the U.S. a solid claim to what became the Oregon country and the Pacific Northwest. Yet, we know so little about Gray. There are no contemporary portraits of him; we don't even know when he officially died.
