Any attempted plot summary would damage the author’s vision through reduction. Expect layers—part mystery, part dark comedy, delivered in unique voice by an author who understands the rhythm and beauty of prose. The comedy reminded me of a quote by the philosopher Theodor Adorno: “There is laughter because there is nothing to laugh at.” And I did laugh out loud, between tears. This one will stick with you.
The Gopher King, by Gojan Nikolich, is an interesting story. However, as a reader, it was the way the story was told that intrigued me. The author has a very original, gritty style. I don’t have much common with the protagonist, but seeing through the world through his eyes caused me to feel a lot of empathy for him and I really cared what became of him.
