Nicholson, G.W.L. (1902-1980) was an Historian and Director of the Historical Section, Army Headquarters, and an author. Born in England, Nicholson came to Canada in 1919. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from Queen's University in 1931 and a Bachelor of Pedagogy from the University of Toronto in 1935. A high school teacher by profession, Nicholson was principal of Battleford Collegiate in Battleford Saskatchewan. At the out-break of the Second World War he was commissioned in the Prince Albert and Battleford Volunteers (NPAM). He served with the unit from its mobilization until 1943, when he joined the Army's Historical Section. In 1946 Nicholson was appointed officer-in-charge of the Historical Section at Canadian Military Headquarters in London, England. The following year he was appointed Deputy Director of the Historical Section, Army Headquarters, Ottawa. After the retirement of C.P. Stacey in 1959, Nicholson was appointed Director - a position he held until his retirement from the Army in 1961. He was the author of many books and articles «

Critiques

The writing is well done, and the units involved are small enough to maintain an interesting narrative. the major officers can be tracked, and this is the most successful volume of official military history I have read. The indexing is good, and the maps are excellent.
