Eric Pfeiffer Newman was born in St. Louis, Missouri on May 25, 1911. He became interested in coins at the age of 7 when his grandfather gave him a copper-nickel Indian Head penny minted in 1859. He received a bachelor of science degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1932 and a afficher plus doctor of jurisprudence degree from Washington University in 1935. He worked for a St. Louis law firm, but left in 1943 to work for Edison Brothers Stores, a retail chain founded in the 1920s by his wife's family. He rose to executive vice president in 1968 and retired in 1987. He became one of America's top authorities on the art and history of coinage and paper money. He wrote several books about currency including The 1776 Continental Currency Coinage, The Secret of the Good Samaritan Shilling, The Fantastic 1804 Dollar written with Kenneth E. Bressett, and The Early Paper Money of America. He received the Farran Zerbe Memorial Award and the Archer M. Huntington Medal of the American Numismatic Society. He was inducted into the American Numismatic Association's Hall of Fame in 1986. He founded the Newman Money Museum in 2006 at Washington University in St. Louis.
