Really liked this. Ms Nardin's book is from 1985, the height of "Pym-mania", and reflects some lack of knowledge in certain areas of Pym's life, not to mention that a couple of novels from the archive, which would subsequently be published, had not yet been released. But this is just to situate the volume in its context. Nardin has a wide-ranging, intuitive understanding of Pym's novels, of their place within the broader canon of English literature, and the many themes and concerns of the author's work. Still available, this book's title says it all. The book is fine. I enjoy India, and if you have young readers who enjoyed the REAL Little Women book by Louisa May Alcott or have seen the new movie, this would be a good book to compare and contrast.
I think I probably would have had a hard time being bashed over the head with the 'imperialism is bad' message even if I'd read it at the young adult appropriate age, but it was enjoyable (and imperialism is bad).
