Jürgen Müller

Taschen is a publisher of high quality art books, and several of their titles deal with cinema, including several in their "archives" series on selected directors (I have their edition on Stanley Kubrick, and it is superlative in all respects).

Being a fan of film noirs, be they American or French, classical period or neo-noir, I had to get this from my local library. It's an extremely heavy, oversized tome printed on thick, glossy paper. I don't think it was a good idea to go with black pages with white text, however. The black page shows any hint of oil from one's fingers, marring the looks.

There are three well-written essays to start things off, one by the filmmaker Paul Schrader. He points out that noir is not a genre, but a style. I get that, but to me there are certain thematic elements that also make up noir. Then the book does anywhere from 4 to 8 pages on each of the 100 selected films. The text is written by several different writers who provide insight into the elements that make that film special. But the main attraction here are the well-selected stills taken from the films themselves.

Perhaps my opinion is rather parochial, but some of these films I don't consider noir, or even noirish. For instance, Psycho. It's a great film, but it's not noir; it's a horror film, and one of the best. I would have picked some different neo-noir films, such as Night Moves. But all in all, this is a fantastic book; one of the best graphical coffee table books imaginable on the subject.… (plus d'informations)

In seinem Buch Filme der 80er lässt Autor Jürgen Müller auf nicht weniger als knapp 900 Seiten die cineastischen Highlights dieser abwechslungsreichen Dekade Revue passieren. In chronologischer Reihenfolge werden die Jahre 1981 bis 1990 abgehandelt, wobei ein Film im Durchschnitt auf sechs Seiten beschrieben wird. Neben einer ausführlichen Inhaltsangabe und Kritik gibt es zu jedem Titel eine Vielzahl hochwertiger Fotos, bekannte Zitate sowie zusätzliche Hintergrundinfos.
Dass der eine oder andere Leser seine persönlichen Favoriten nicht wiederfindet, ist eher unwahrscheinlich. Von A wie Amadeus bis Z wie Zurück in die Zukunft, vom Indie-Hit Down by Law bis zum Kassenschlager E.T. - Der Außerirdische, vom Horror-Schocker Tanz der Teufel bis zur Erfolgsklamotte Die nackte Kanone: Müller und sein Team von Mitarbeitern haben ganze Arbeit geleistet und eine vortreffliche Auswahl von insgesamt 145 einflussreichen und nach wie vor sehenswerten Werken getroffen. Und auch wenn amerikanische Produktionen deutlich in der Mehrheit sind, vergisst die Publikation keinesfalls das europäische Kino, zum Beispiel in Form von Betty Blue oder Time of the Gypsies. Selbst der deutsche Film, der sich in den 80er-Jahren wahrlich nicht gerade mit Ruhm bekleckert hat, ist mit einigen Hochkarätern wie Das Boot oder Männer präsent.

Die entscheidenden Filmemacher des Jahrzehnts waren Müller zufolge George Lucas und Steven Spielberg. Mit der Geburtsstunde des so genannten Blockbusters (Krieg der Sterne und Der Weiße Hai) legten beide schon in den späten 70er-Jahren den Grundstein für die Zukunft Hollywoods. Im Mittelpunkt standen fortan teuer produzierte und spezialeffektlastige Eventmovies, die sich in erster Linie als Spektakel für den Zuschauer verstanden. Als Schlüsselfilm der Dekade macht der Autor in einem klugen Vorwort Ridley Scotts Blade Runner aus. Zu Recht, denn kaum ein anderes Werk hat die Filmwelt in ästhetischer Hinsicht dermaßen nachhaltig beeinflusst. Fazit: Filme der 80er bietet geballtes Wissen für Film-Freaks und Nostalgiker. Außerdem gelingt es dem Buch, genau das zu vermitteln, was viele Beiträge zur Filmliteratur schmerzlich vermissen lassen: die Lust auf das Kino. --Marc Osmers… (plus d'informations)
