This book contains versions of 8 well known fairytales that were originally printed in France back in 1696 by Ch. Perrault. Each is proceeded by a brief historical background passage and illustrations from different versions of the story. I really enjoyed reading the introduction to this book that talks more about Perrault and how he came to create the world's most popular fairytales.

Merchant of Venice is factual information of the historical merchants who traveled in the early 17th century. The author gives us insight to the companies that were formed, and the various voyages that companies invested for profit. After explaining the different aspects of being a merchant and a voyager during these times the historical background is then merged into the play of The Merchant of Venice by Shakespeare. The story involves a wealthy woman who is courted by various princes that must choose from three caskets set up by Portia’s father that will determine the outcome of the prince’s courtship. Bassanio is in love with Portia, although he does not have a grand fortune like that of the princes he barrows money from his friend Antonio. Antonio barrows money from someone who despises and lends Antonio based on Antonio giving up a pound of his flesh if the debt is not paid. Bassonio chooses the correct casket and wins Portia’s hand in marriage. Meanwhile Antonio is taken to court by the person who he is in debt to. Portia disguises herself as a man and appears before the court as Antonio’s lawyer. She wins the case and all is restored so that she and her husband can be together and start their new life.…
