Makes use of non-U.S., especially Vietnamese sources available since the fall of the Soviet Union, showing role of USSR and China in the conflict and of North Vietnamese control of Viet Cong. Favors military view of the war, but he backs up views with detail, so his conclusions can be reasonably debated. A landmark, eye-opening work, well worth the time.
