This is my first book by Hanna Morrissey and I did not realize it was part of a series. I loved this book and will go back and read the previous 2 of the Black Harbor series. I was gifted this book and as soon as I read the synopsis I was interested in reading it.

When I'm Dead is the 3rd book in the Black Harbor series. You have a murder of a girl and one girl is missing. Chloe goes missing after leaving the local high school after her performance in the play. Her mother and father are out investigating the murder of her daughter's best friend.

The emotions that Rowan and her husband go through are nerve racking. I found myself getting upset because they wouldn't talk to each other about what they were thinking. Is their daughter the murderer or is their daughter the next victim of the killer?

You have Libby the neighbor who is friends with Chloe and is a very peculiar person. She practices taxidermy and is a little larger than most of the girls in her school. One of my fave reads this year.

This is a really good story, but the author made the characters a bit too intense in their thoughts which border on ridiculous and stupid. It was also too easy to figure out who the killer was.

While this book did keep me up to finish it last night, the voice of the mother was a little whiny for me. I probably would have liked this better if I had read it. The teenage angst and mean girls were well done. This is book 3 of the Black Harbor series which I didn't know but it read fibe as a stand alone.

When I’m Dead by Hannah Morrissey is a complex examination of a parent’s worst nightmare, coupled with long held secrets, and relentless shame. When Medical Examiner Rowan Winthrop and her husband are called away from a school function, yet again disappointing their daughter Chloe, her parting words are haunting...”You’ll love me more when I’m dead.”. Chloe’s best friend has been brutally murdered, and when Rowan finally gets home Chloe is missing.
Morrissey expertly plots the investigation of complex teenage relationships, while keeping this a very adult suspense thriller. She layers this with a stagnant marriage, unresolved guilt, and toxic workplace dynamics. Unreliable narrators and morally grey characters muddy the plot further. I loved how well the Wisconsin location is used as its own character. The third book in the Black Harbor series. I had no problem reading this as a stand alone. I think it’s a great choice for those that may not typically read police procedurals, a propulsive suspense thriller. There are some rather graphic scenes. I’m horror-averse and did okay, but be aware.
Thank you to @Minotaur_Books @hannahmorrisseywriter and @netgalley for the early copy.
