Substance: The story of the idealistic young adventurer and his companions (especially the sentient donkey, who is undoubtedly the smartest member of the group) is charming but still has serious moments. For an older junior, who can process some of the irony.

This is a poignant and highly imaginative reinterpretation of Greek myth and the story of Atlantis, with the Greek Gods re-cast as members of an advanced space faring society who have been sent out to foster civilization on different planets and have based themselves on the Island of Atlantis. For many generations their work of teaching people throughout the known world has prospered, but now there are rumours of a new war-like people in the frozen north who worship a God instead of the Great Mother as do the people of the south, and the dragon paths above the world are changing....

A thoroughly engrossing read and a very enjoyable and unexpected find.

The book was already old when I bought it for a dollar from a local library's retired books bin. But 30 years later, whenever we're watching a TV show or movie that has to do with the British monarchy, we pull out the book and read the behind-the-scenes stories of what was happening on screen. One of the most thumbed-through books in our library.
