This is historical fiction based on the early British settlers to Cupid’s Cove in Newfoundland in 1610 or so. I believe this area is now called Carbonear.
Several men with families in Bristol decide to travel to the new land to scope it out for future settlements. They are away from home for 1-2 years before they are able to bring their wives, other women and labourers to Newfoundland. Kathryn Fry is among the elite as her husband Nicholas is one of the first settlers. She arrives with her lifelong servant and friend Nancy Ellis. Ned Perry a Mason by training is besotted with Nancy. Other families are eager to begin a new life and everyone contributes to construction of housing, outbuildings, farming, fishing and other tasks.
Pirates are an issue but they seem to leave them alone.
The story starts of really well and is very interesting but it peters off half way through and I was anxious to finish it.
This is the first of a trilogy.

Old Brown sells from off the shelf most anything you please
He’s got jews-harps for the little boys, lollipops and cheese.
His daughter minds the store and it’s a treat to see her serve
I’d like to run away with her but I don’t have the nerve.

Blurb: Trudy Morgan-Cole offers the saga of three generations of Holloway women, who run a small grocery and confectionary store in the storied working-class neighborhood [sic] of Rabbittown in St. John’s, Newfoundland. . . . Most Anything You Please is an affirmation of the connections between mothers, daughters, and the communities they build, a story about the bonds that break and the ties that bind.

Ellen & Wes Holloway move to St. John’s and build a store with an apartment above. They raise 6 or 7 children, of whom Audrey takes over the running of the store. Audrey’s son Henry is a ne’er-do-well and leaves his baby daughter Rachel with Audrey & Ellen when his wife drives her car off a cliff. Audrey raises Rachel who eventually gets into the traditional music scene in Newfoundland.

Kate Nichol, a junior in college, is in the toughest year of her life. Roommates captures this roller coaster year and all the thrill and turbulence of college right along with it! It's the story of how two friends from different religious backgrounds help each other find God. What happens when the people they love choose to leave Him behind.
