First in a series ( I thought of three books, but am not sure now). Not really interesting for my reading, as it deals with some dimensional rift that placed vampire-type humanoids on Earth. The story itself wasn't too terrible, but I just am a bit tired of vamps. I have the 2nd and 3rd books, but think I will pass on them....

The author is very good at writing horrific scenes and describing events. However, there were two major issues I had with the book:

1. The jumping back and forth in time is not the type of story I enjoy. I want the story to flow over me, to engulf me. It just becomes jolting to have to reset the perspective every chapter, to work at fitting the current chapter into the overall puzzle of what is going on.

2. There's a chapter of the book where everything is "spoon fed" to us -- what is going on, why it is happening, what needs to happen to resolve the situation, etc. Those types of things should be revealed piece by piece while the story itself is being told, not suddenly explained to us as if it is something the author forgot to tell us and thinks we need to know to catch up to what is going on.

Would have given it a higher rating, but the over-use of the word 'arcane' and other mis-used words preclude me from doing so.

So I finished this a few days ago, and needed that time to think about a review. This is a complicated book, in a simple way. Make sense? I didn't think so.

There is simply a TON of stuff happening in this book, with many characters in several locations, all pushing towards one goal: killing the dream witch intent on taking the Blood Queen's throne in the Dark Tower.

The blurb says the book is "action packed", and that's no lie. I was exhausted by the end of the book from all of the battles, tense runs through demon-invested pitch-black halls, and surprising reveals. That's one thing that Mr. Montano is very good at: battle scenes. His descriptive powers are among the best in dark fantasy today.

There's so much more to say about this book, but I don't want to spoil it. Read the book/series!
