A period piece, but a very good read. Just a pity it was not extended to cover 1945. Nicely illustrated. Well worth searching out the original edition (see Comments below).

Reproduction of the original advice issued during rationing, this still has relevance today in these times of frugality. Whilst some of the ideas had been handed down to me, I did pick up a few new tips I'll try out.

Published in August 1942 just as more and more four engine bombers were becoming available, this British Government booklet outline the efforts so far in bombing German targets with mainly inadequate aircraft. Amazing stories of heroism are interspersed in the narrative. Intended as propaganda, the authors do highlight the successes, but also point out the failures such as the disaster of the escape of the Gneisenau and Scharnhorst from Brest to their home ports in Germany. This booklet lets us glimpse what the British were thinking early in the War when most things had been going badly. The fascination of this brief volume is that it was written right after, if not during the battle, so it does have immediacy. Surprisingly, it is not entirely one sided. German aviators are often sited for their bravery, especially as the battle reached its conclusion and it became very obvious that attacking England in daylight was very dangerous.
