He taught practical theology at Westminster Theological Seminary and was involved in church planting in Ireland, Uganda, Kenya and Spain. His analysis of the attitudes and challenges of ingrown churches are apt and spot on-- withdrawal from world, assertion of superiority, self-justification and rationalization of anemic growth and internal challenges, and so on and so forth. Many of the suggestions for growth-- directing the church toward God's purpose for it, casting a vision, encouraging members, prayer, reliance on God, small groups, dedication of ministers and elders to the work of equipping saints, acts of service, among others-- are also beneficial.
The author is Evangelical, heavily influenced by Luther, Calvin, Wesley, Edwards, and the like, and the over-reliance on Protestant dogma dampens the book's effectiveness. Nevertheless, many good things to consider.… (plus d'informations)
