- Esther Meynell, née Moorhouse, was born in Leeds, in Yorkshire, England. In 1909, she married Gerard Tuke Meynell and became a niece by marriage of the poet and suffragist Alice Meynell. The couple had one child. Esther is best known as the author of The Little Chronicle of Magdalena Bach (1925), a fictional autobiography of Anna Magdalena Bach, wife of composer Johann Sebastian Bach. She also wrote about two dozen other novels and nonfiction works published under her own name and the pen name E. Hallam Moorhouse, including the biography Nelson’s Lady Hamilton (1906); Time's Door (1935), a time travel novel; and books about the county of Sussex, where she lived for many years.
