Review of: Small Animal Internal Medicine for Veterinary Technicians and Nurses, edited by Linda Merrill

I would like to thank Wiley-Blackwell publishers for giving me the opportunity to review this book.

This book is the first of its kind for technicians and nurses. The chapters are organized by body system, and the language and scope of knowledge is geared toward active technicians. This would also be a valuable resource for students as well, once they have a basic grasp of internal medicine.

The chapters are organized logically. First, the clinical signs of each disease process are described, then diagnostic testing is explained, including bloodwork, imaging and biopsy, if indicated. Then follows treatments, pharmacology, and prognosis and survival times. Anesthetic and analgesic concerns are also included.

There is not an overabundance of photographs, but there are tables that sum up important points. There is a companion website that provides images for downloading, tests with separate answers, illustrated tables and videos. Bear in mind that you must have PowerPoint on your computer to see the images.

The last three chapters are about vaccines and immunology, pain and pain management, and nursing. Diagnostic procedures, such as endoscopy, urinary catheters, and bone marrow collection are described.

This text is a must add to any technician’s library, whether they are just starting out, or studying for their internal medicine specialty. This is a book that can be referred to again and again, throughout the technician’s career.
