For those new to qualitative research, this book provides a straight-forward approach to conducting the six types of qualitative research. Often, faculty who are trained in quanitative research begin exploring how they teach and how their students learn (SoTL) but don't have the qualitative research background to be successful. This book is designed for this type of adult learner.

In this third edition, the authors explore differences and similarities between teaching traditional students and non-traditional students sometimes termed adult learners. Some in the book also argue that the vast majority of college students achieve the status of adult learner as they progress through the degree. One new addition in this edition is a discussion on andragogy (teaching adult learners) and whether it is a subset of or is different than pedagogy.
