Shuli Mensh’s Brain Waves tells the story of a successful woman lawyer whose life changes forever in an instant. Recently engaged, Sarah Morgan heads her own law firm, and flies to Chicago to give a professional lecture. While the trip accomplishes all of Sarah’s objectives and more, the phone calls with her fiancé back home in California take on an increasingly menacing tone. Michael Sloane sees his engagement to Sarah as a stepping stone to full partner in the firm. He demands to settle a case that he and Sarah have worked for years, but Sarah thinks that going to court will land them much more money--for the firm and for the clients.
At Sarah’s bat mitzvah, her grandmother tells her in chillingly prescient words not to ever forget who she is. Michael is not Jewish and Sarah postpones telling her grandmother about the engagement. And then, as the result of an accident, Sarah does forget everything, including her name and everything about herself.
Shuli Mensh captures Sarah’s emotions and the personalities of the other characters so well that the reader is compelled to turn the pages to find out what happens. She draws the plot line through many twists and surprises the reader. Best of all, though, is the inspirational quality of the book. Shuli Mensh leads the reader on a voyage of spiritual discovery that will energize even the most complacent reader to new efforts. Brain Waves satisfies the reader on many levels. Pull this one out of the pile. It’s heart-warming and thrilling.
