The author introduces the book with a wonderful question: How do we count today?

The author provides an academic and historical development of our words for numbers. The book attempts to determine HOW and WHAT we actually count and what "counting" really is.

Before computers and calculators, people had to perform arithmetic entirely by hand. Tools such as an abacus and slide rule were available, and eventually an adding machine, but surprisingly, a good calculator (a person, not a thing) could beat these devices handily on certain kinds of problems. This book contains fascinating, clever tricks for performing arithmatic by force of mind. You'll surprise your friends all the more now that arithmetic is becoming a lost art.
