"When He Loves Her" by Angelia Vernon Menchan

My Thoughts.....

These were some sweet HEA short collection of stories that will capture your heart as you are reading this uplifting read and even put a smile on your face. I loved all of these African American stories that were about Oscar & Isira, Fredrick & Aga, Terrell & Lia, Donald & Dana, Marion & Raymond, Anders & Maura, and Maura & Desmond. Most of all the reader will be able to see just how these couple's grow not only 'mentally, emotionally and but even spiritually' and even more so people you maybe able to relate to. If you are looking for some great love stories "When He Loves Her" will give it to you oh so well. Thank you to the author for giving the readers some good stories of Black Men loving some good Black Women.… (plus d'informations)

Always Watch Your Back

The long awaited sequel “The Blacks: Love's Politics - New Beginnings” is finally here. When “Mrs. Black?” ended Cinnamon Brown divorced her philandering husband and married her longtime family friend Malcolm Black.

Malcolm and Cinnamon are newly married, happy and eager to begin a new life. But wherever Malcolm and Cinnamon go, drama always follows. When the couple return from their idyllic honeymoon, the newlyweds are pleasantly surprised to find Malcolm's name has been submitted in the mayoral race.

Shortly after Malcolm starts up his campaign, slowly people start coming out of the woodwork and slander the future mayor. Someone obviously wants Malcolm out of the race. As Malcolm prepares to throw in the towel, Cinnamon is adamant that he stay in the race. She's determined to find out who is trying to sabotage Malcolm and she plans to put a stop to it.

Cinnamon's writing career is skyrocketing but she has recently been threatened with a lawsuit against her regarding an article she penned. Now the Blacks are more perplexed than ever as they try to figure out who's trying to destroy them.

Will the Blacks ever find out who their enemies are? Find out the answers to the many questions the author poses. “The Blacks: Love's Politics – New Beginnings" is non stop drama from beginning to end. The author puts so much detail into each character and situation. I had a love/hate relationship with each person. Kudos! Angelia Vernon Menchan does it again.

Quote from the book:
“…secrets always had a way of coming out in unexpected ways.”

I must say this book was such a delightful read! Honestly, I almost did not commit to this review because I was judging the book by the title alone. I was afraid it was going to be a profanity and sex laden urban read. (DISCLAIMER: If you like reading those types of books, I am not trying to be derogatory I simply do not like that genre.) Zen Cooper is a realistic depiction of the issues most teenagers face and family dynamics in the 21st century.

Zen Cooper is a fourteen year old smart, eclectic teenager who is often misunderstood by her peers and most adults. Zen is full of wisdom and quite pleasant for a teenager. Her most trusted friend is “Crazy Charlie.” Charlie is a Vietnam War veteran that has some emotional problems and a big secret. Zen’s mother has her own emotional baggage she is carrying from a troubled childhood and failed relationships. Alfrieda, Zen’s mother, and her mother have a rocky relationship that affects the way Alfrieda relates to Zen. Zen simply wants to receive the love that she gives. Zen’s big heart and electric personality breaks down barriers to mend hearts and reconcile relationships. This story really draws you in with its characters and realistic plot. It was a well paced novel but the ending left me wanting more.

It was refreshing to read a positive story about a teenager that was focused and secure in who she was. Menchan wrote a novel that emphasized the importance of family and how it shapes and molds a child. I would recommend this book to any age group but it would make a perfect gift for a teenage woman.

Highly Recommended

With eight other titles under her belt, author Angelia Vernon Menchan decided to share her wisdom with the world and release Re-Rambled: Food and Thought. Re-Rambled started off as blog entries on Angelia’s blog and after numerous requests from her readers she decided to compile them into a book. Well I guess I need to back up. Re-Rambled is an updated version of her previously released book, Ramblings. In Re-Rambled, Angelia added more content and re-released it.

Re-Rambled can easily serve as a life compass. It has the ability to guide you through various situations no matter where you are in your life. Angelia has skillfully used this book as a tool to reiterate some things you already knew, it schools you on unfamiliar topics and confirms some things you were thinking but just wasn’t sure about.

Getting into the meat of the book, it’s filled with a myriad of topics. Reveal to Heal is one of the ones that really stand out to me. In the African-American community, we have a cultural problem of not wanting to discuss “our business.” In this entry, Angelia talks about the young child murdered because of her mother selling her into prostitution. Then in Who Are Those People, she touches on the touchy topic of being different. You know when people ask you where you got certain habits from as if it’s a crime to be different. For instance, when my friends ask me things like, “When did you start eating sushi?” Or when parents, ask their kids where they got certain habits from as if they are not individuals that live in a revolving world. Just because you do it doesn’t mean I have to and vice versa. Finally, one of the entries that really stood out to me is something that I often hit on when talking about people, The Change. No, not that change. I mean change in the sense of changing people. Unfortunately some people think they have that capability. Like when you hear your girlfriends say, “If I lay it down right then he might marry me.” But he already said he doesn’t want to get married. Or when your homeboy says, “If I pipe her down real good then she might have my baby.” But she already told you she don’t want any kids. Yep, Angelia is referring to that change. For anyone who missed the memo, you can’t change or control people. On that note, I’ll leave you with this quote from that entry:
“So if there is any message in this,
It would have to be this,
We can change only ourselves,
But if the people we have to coexist with,
Aren’t good for us,
We might have to change our circumstances,
But we will NOT change them,
It is not our jobs,
And there is too much else to be done!"
Roger that! Angelia, you put it down with this book. This is must read for anyone, man, woman or child. It covers the simplest of subjects to the matters of the heart that often seem too hard to address. This book should definitely be on your bookshelf and will make a great gift, especially for a graduate or student going off to college. .

The only change I would make to this book is to add a table of contents. I can easily see myself referring back to this book and it would be great to just go to a particular entry instead of having to frantically flipping through pages because I can’t find it :). And I know it’s here. LOL! Nevertheless, I guess I have to take what I got because I must admit I got some good…
