An art-historical love story with a sting in its tail. In 1637 Bernini carved a sensual marble portrait of his lover, Costanza, the wife of one of his assistants. A year later, in a jealous rage, he sent a servant to slash her face with a razor and disfigure her forever. Using these two events as a basis, the historian Sarah McPhee reconstructs the remarkable life of Costanza Piccolomini and uses it as the springboard for a compelling and vivid exploration of art and life in Baroque Rome.
