A new collection of essays, The Arms of Morpheus, edited by Stephen McNeilly, sets out to rectify the misconception, showing that Swedenborg belongs very much to a strong lineage of thinkers, both before and after him, who dared to challenge intellectual orthodoxy and propose views of the universe that defy the accepted Western philosophical paradigm.

It is easy to cast the Swedish mystic, Emmanuel Swedenborg, as some lone, deranged seer, living on the fringes of society, conversing with angels and visiting heaven and hell. Not true: Swedenborg was an upstanding member of society - he was even a member of parliament - and by all accounts he was a pleasant chap. This collection of essays further de-marginalises him in terms of his beliefs by situating him in a recognised lineage of mystical thought.
