3965. The History of India, by John McLeod (read 17 Dec 2004) This is a volume in The Greenwood Histories of the Modern Nations, published in 2002. India before the 18th century is of little interest to me, but after that it is a history of much interest. But I was surprised at what a tumultuous time India has had in the last 50 years, especially Indira Gandhi's time when she was prime minister from 1966 to 1977 and from 1980 till she was assassinated in 1984--one almost thought that shooting her was the only way to rid India of her dictatorship.
