When Your Daddy's a Soldier par Gretchen Brandenburg McLellan
Lovely book. Made me cry. Realistic depictions of emotions of children and spouse at home and waiting for a return.
When you need a story about helping kids focus, or about seeing a project through to the end, this is a good one --great illustrations, nicely written book.
I stumbled upon this book in the library and fell in love with it. The main character Mrs. McBee conveys that although endings are sad, it always means that there are great new beginnings.
Little Beaver is building a dam, but keeps getting distracted by his friends. His mama and papa keep calling him back by slapping their tails on the water, and he adds more sticks and mud ("Nibble nibble snap, scoop scoop pat"), but still it is not enough. Finally, with help from his friends (bird, otter, and fish), the dam is finished and Little Beaver has made a pond to play in and race across.
The illustrations look like pen and ink and watercolor; all animals, especially the beavers, look quite realistic, except for the fish, which looks a bit cartoonish. Prevalent colors are blues, greens, and browns.
