DI Zoe Finch has moved to Whitehaven from Birmingham and is thrown into a murder investigation on her first day with a new team and a demanding Superintendent. Nicely drawn characters and strong use of location. Seamless writing not obviously written jointly by two authors.

DI Tanner has joined the new Complex Crimes Unit, recovering from the death of her husband. Her first case is literally close to home, a murder across Loch Lomond from her house. Joining her team is DS Mo Uddin from Birmingham and Dr McBride a psychologist. Interesting cast of characters and dynamic of Tanner's new team.

A prequel to the main series. I got it as a teaser as I am thinking about getting the series as I’m from the area and know the locations well.

I wasn’t impressed with the writing style - I found it an odd mixture of interior monologue and choppiness; it didn’t seem to flow well. It may work better in a longer work, but I found it rather jarring to read in a novella. The short chapters weren’t helping to settle into the story.

In terms of plot, it’s very much a teaser, setting up the series arc. Location-wise, I had no complaints, although taking 20 minutes to get from Winfrith to Blandford Forum is a bit of a stretch - maybe with blues and twos it’s possible. Part of the route is a B-road, so that slows things down.

OK with reservations. I might give book 1 a go if there’s a Kindle deal available; the sample seemed to flow better than this.

A worthy addition to the pantheon of female detectives. Zoe Finch, may have some of the fictional detective tropes, single parent and sexual discrimination, but the author has come up with fast-paced plot involving high-level police corruption, with some interesting twists. The setting is mainly suburban Birmingham, Selly Oak and Harborne with which the author is clearly very familiar and uses well. Recommended.
